Casino etiquette for first-timers: what nobody tells you
Your first casino night shouldn't feel like a test. The unwritten rules of The Star's floor — chips, hands, tipping, photos — explained like a mate would.
Nobody's born knowing casino rules — everyone at that blackjack table was new once. Here's the stuff that makes the difference between looking lost and looking fine.
Getting in
The Star Gold Coast is strictly 18+ and photo ID is checked at the door — a physical licence or passport, not a photo of one. Dress code is smart-casual; after 9pm that means no thongs, singlets or beachwear. Leave the camera habits at the door too: photos on the gaming floor are a hard no.
Joining a table
Wait for the current hand or spin to finish, catch the dealer's eye, and place your cash on the felt — never hand it directly (rules, not rudeness). Minimums are posted on a sign at each table; Friday nights they climb, weeknights they're friendlier.
The don'ts
- Don't touch chips after 'no more bets' is called
- Don't hand cards to other players or coach mid-hand
- Don't take calls at the table — step away
- Don't chase losses; the floor will still be there tomorrow
Tipping & staff
Australian casinos don't run on tips the way Vegas does, but a small dealer tip after a good run is appreciated — slide a chip forward and say 'for you'. Cocktail service circulates on the main floor; private salons have dedicated staff.
